Understanding Your Fees

Managing your tuition and fees doesn’t have to be complicated.

This page explains how your fees are calculated, what payment options are available, and where to find your Statement of Account, so you can stay on top of your finances at Western.

Tuition Fee Categories

Your legal status and residency determine the tuition fees you pay. Students are categorized as either domestic or international based on their citizenship or residency.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected persons with a primary residence in Ontario are eligible to pay domestic tuition fees.

Definitions:

Canadian Citizen: A citizen of Canada within the meaning of the Citizenship Act, or a person registered as an Indian within the meaning of the Indian Act.

Permanent Resident:  A person who has been granted "permanent resident" status and has not had that status revoked, or a person who has been approved “in-principle” for permanent resident status in Canada. Evidence of this is a letter which confirms that Citizenship and Immigration Canada has determined that they are eligible for immigration to Canada or meets the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent resident status in Canada.

Protected Persons:  A person, and their dependents, who has been determined to be a protected person, including a Convention refugee or a person in need of protection, within the meaning of subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) or the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons whose primary residence is outside Ontario are charged domestic non-Ontario tuition fees. These rates are higher than those for students living in Ontario.

Students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents are charged international student tuition.

Per Course vs. Program Fees

Your tuition is calculated based on your course load or program:

  • Full program rate: More than 4.0 courses
  • Per-course rate: Less than 4.0 courses
  • Deadline to choose per-course billing: January 31, 2026

Students who are billed full program fees but who intend to take 3.5 or 3.75 courses between September and April can request that their fees be recalculated on a per-course basis.

Course Load Fee Type
less than 3.5 courses per-course rate
3.5-3.75 courses per-course rate (must opt in by January 31)
4.0 courses full program rate
cohort programs (Engineering, Nursing, Education Pre-Service, HBA, Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Students on Exchange) full program rate

View Your Statement of Account

All your fees in one place

You can find your Statement of Account in the Student Financials section your Student Center. It will show you your balance owing, charges, bursaries and funding, and more.

Fee Breakdown

If you are a new international undergraduate student (a student who needs a study permit to study in Canada), you must pay a non-refundable admission deposit when you accept your offer of admission. The deposit acts as a credit towards your tuition balance.

The amount you need to pay, in Canadian dollars, will be shown in your Offer Letter. This deposit is not billed through your Student Center and will not appear on your Statement of Account.

This amount is based on your citizenship status – if you are a domestic or international student, whether you are a graduate, professional, or undergraduate student, your program of study and courseload.

Ancillary fees are fees included in your Statement of Account that help keep the university running. There are two categories of ancillary fees: Student Organization Fees and Western Student Ancillary Fees. All Ancillary fees are approved by the Board of Governors at Western.

The individual fees in each category will differ depending on if you are an undergraduate or graduate student.

Student Organization Fees include fees such as clubs, student councils, Orientation Week, academic support resources, Faculty donations, and more. Some of these fees can be opted out of – for a full list of fees you can opt out of, scroll further down to the “Opt out" section.

You have the option of opting out of certain fees; this option is only available for specific fees. All approved opt outs will be applied to your account in late Fall.
